Employer Identification Number (AKA “Federal Tax Identification Number”)

A nine-digit number  issued by the IRS to identify a business entity for tax purposes. EINs are used by employers, sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, non-profit associations, trusts, estates of decedents, government agencies, certain individuals, and other business entities. Most commonly a company will need this number if they intend to have employees and/or will open a bank account for the company.
